PSHE, SMSC & SRE

At Northumberland PRU PSHE is a planned, developmental programme of learning through which our pupilss acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to make informed choices now, and in the future. We strive to help our pupils to build their confidence, resilience and self esteem in order to build healthy relationships and achieve success both in school and also in the wider world.

KS3/KS4 Curriculum Overview

Studying PSHE helps our pupils become well-rounded citizens with important knowledge of the wider world that will help them stay healthy, safe and prepare them for adult life and work in modern Britain.

At key stage 3, students build on the knowledge and understanding, skills, attributes and values they have acquired and developed during the primary phase. PSHCE education acknowledges and addresses the changes that young people experience, beginning with transition to secondary school, the challenges of adolescence and their increasing independence. It teaches the knowledge and skills which will equip them for the opportunities and challenges of life. Students learn to manage diverse relationships, their online lives, and the increasing influence of peers and the media.

At key stage 4, students deepen knowledge and understanding, extend and rehearse skills, and further explore attitudes, values and attributes acquired during key stage 3. PSHCE education reflects the fact that students are moving towards an independent role in adult life, taking on greater responsibility for themselves and others.

Students will be taught PSHE lessons in key stage 3 (year 7, 8 & 9) in bespoke PSHE lessons as well as in wider curriculum subjects.  In key stage 4 (year 10 & 11) students will also be taught in PSHE lessons. These themes will also be taught in tutor times and during morning registration sessions.
